Movie Synopsis
A penniless French solider uses his charms to rise to power in Paris as he manipulates the real power behind the city’s most influential and wealthy – their wives.
Movie Review Summary
A young charming man sleeps his way through the wives of the wealthy to manipulate them and get what he wants…what could wrong? Well, this did frankly. It feels like the story went for a biography rather than a drama, and it would have been much better if it even skirted the realms of a comedy, as it may have provoked a reaction in the audience. Honestly, the cast you cannot fault for this, they play their roles well enough and given the right script and direction, I think this could have been a much much better film. As it stands, when the curtain comes down on the last scene, you’re still wondering why the things are happening as they are, but then you’re frankly not bothered enough to give it a second though.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Movie Synopsis
Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, cannot understand why he can’t be friends with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence.
Movie Review Summary
I don’t want to give away how this ends, but sadly, it’s not an ending worth waiting for. The reason for that is the story loses the idea of why this should be a film. There’s no completion of characters, only questions left, and what is a glimmer of hope amongst a sea of darkness is completely missed. In fact, the story is just a tragedy. It’s nicely acted, the characters are believable but it really suffers when it doesn’t understand where it is going to. Ultimately it’s a dark, dark place, with no hope offered to anyone. You have high hopes that something good will come of it all and sadly that just doesn’t come true.

Going The Distance
Movie Synopsis
When Garrett meets Erin, they have a blast together, the problem is that she is going back to live the other side of America, so they must decide if they want to keep their love going while they live separately.
Movie Review Summary
This is a good little comedy romance. It’s not going to se the world alight for what it is but it’s a worthy watch. Drew Barrymore and Justin Long are well cast in their roles and they are beautifully aided by the OCD Christina Applegate. Overall the script could have been better tidied up to make this somewhat more of an epic, rather than as a ‘me too’ kind of comedy romance. If it’s on a screen near you do give it a watch.

Mirror Mirror
Movie Synopsis
An evil Queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled Snow White enlists the help of seven resourceful dwarf rebels to win back her birthright.
Movie Review Summary
This film came out about the same time as Snow White and the Huntsman (featuring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, which has already been reviewed). Having seen them both it is interesting to see how both have attempted to retell the story, adapting what we know and love and telling us a different adventure. Whereas Snow White and the Huntsman went for the more epic approach, this one went the route of appealing to children and keeping the story simple. On balance, I prefer Mirror Mirror because it doesn’t have the annoying flaws of Snow White and the Huntsman and because it is probably more akin in style and substance to the original story. That said, it’s still not a great adaptation and it still has its own flaws. Hopefully the next attempt at retelling the story will do it better justice.

Charlie St. Cloud
Movie Synopsis
When Charlie St. Cloud’s little brother is killed, Charlie is given the gift of being able to see him, so when a girl he falls in love with arrives on the scene he is torn between keeping his brother alive or being with the girl.
Movie Review Summary
While this film is based on a well loved book I have to admit that I hadn’t read it. Sometimes that make’s reviewing a movie easier, as you see it for the story that it is, rather than what you’ve read elsewhere being converted to screen. Well, after seeing this I can certainly say it’s a good story. There are some things here and there that could have been tweaked but the story flows beautifully, due in part to the casting, and they present a world that it would be nice to live in for a little longer. The element suspense around Tess is not completely obvious and the penny drops quickly, and it makes the rest of the film feel even more poignant.

The Adjustment Bureau
Movie Synopsis
When an and coming politician has a chance encounter with a dancer, their feelings for each other brings a mysterious force into their lives that aims to keep them apart at any cost.
Movie Review Summary
While in some ways this is a good film, in other ways it feels like it’s got not much new to offer. The bods from the Adjustment Bureau run around like weaker forms of Agent Smith from the Matrix, and David Norris is a mere human being, not a super-duper Neo flying saviour of mankind. Still, this film has a certain charm about it, thanks to the relationship and suspense of David and Elise. Unfortunately, you never feel like the gloves are taken off – the Adjustment Bureau try to keep them apart, and it gets a little more sinister, but that’s about it – and as a result the ending is a disappointment. So this one isn’t a groundbreaker but it’s still a good watch.

Life As We Know It
Movie Synopsis
When two single adults have to become caregivers to an orphaned girl there’s one major problem – they can’t stand each other.
Movie Review Summary
All in all it’s a nice film, definitely one you can watch and a good choice for a night in front of the TV. The overall feeling from this film is that it doesn’t reach the heights it could – it feels a little too familiar without much original being added. The weaknesses around the romance that Holly goes through feel like they’re more add-ons to her life rather than at the center of it, and that means you probably won’t care too much which way it ends out for her. That said, don’t let it put you off, it’s a nice enough story and Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel do well with what they have.
