Movie Review Summary
This could have worked as a film but it’s let down by the fact things are unexplored, characters underdeveloped, and there’s little real suspense. Michael Fassbender as Quintus Dias is nothing special, I’m sure there could have been worse actors for this role, but frankly I couldn’t care less whether his character survived or not. Why has he even learnt Pictish, the act that saves his life, when nobody else in the Roman fort has? Why is Arianne introduced so late to the film, but becomes the remaining purpose in Quintus’s life when he is betrayed by the Romans. Essentially, it becomes a film with people running around, a few battles, a few scores to settle, some betrayals, and not a lot deeper than that. A pity.
