Movie Review Summary
It’s been nine years since our last visit to Middle Earth and off the back of this film the feeling is it’s been too long. This is a lovely reintroduction of a world with much promise of heroes, baddies, evil creatures and magic. We can see why the dwarves and elves don’t see eye-to-eye; we visit new parts of Middle Earth; there are wonderful new dangers; and we touch upon the characters and the story of the ring that we are probably all familiar with. The story could suffer in comparison to the Lord of the Rings series but this one does enough to feel strong enough in its own right. There are parts that hark back to that trilogy, and those cross-references are lovely, but there’s enough new story here to keep most Lord of the Rings fans watching and probably rushing back to read Tolkien’s books in the meantime.
